It's a nice ethical sentiment to "get back to basics," to "simplify," as Thoreau said, and to resist the kind of rampant greed that gives words like "materialism" a bad rap. But the fact is that when people produce goods for us, they produce goods that we want. This is a blessing, an unequivocally good thing. I would not want to live the life of a subsistence farmer. I'm thankful for the many amazing technologies that can be had for a very low price in today's world. I hope it never ends.RP Longhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15028013805248797978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4491040877840120845.post-12397455580987075802012-12-02T21:47:08.338-05:002012-12-02T21:47:08.338-05:00It is important to remember that economics is NOT ...It is important to remember that economics is NOT everything in life. Unfortunately, we live in an overwhelmingly capitalist world, in which people need to work and/or earn money in order to buy things, pay for services, and pay taxes, fines, donations, etc. Why is that? Because the provider of those goods and services have decided, through default mostly, that THEY themselves need money in order to do things as well. I keep wondering if it would be nice to not be so dependent on money, both earning it and having to use it to get by in this world. If people did more things for themselves and by themselves, would they have to spend as much, or anything. For example, take my uncle. He is very self-sufficient, growing his own food, making many of his own consumables, etc. The more things he does himself and makes himself, the less money he spends. But, at the same, because he spends less money, those who would normally get that money are doing without it. Of course, he is just one person. But imagine if millions more people decided NOT to buy anything or NOT to spend money on services -- then those who are dependent on their buying and spending lose revenue. of course, this has already been happening -- in our recent slowdown in the economy, people are spending less and as a result, companies lose revenue, employees are laid off, and since they aren't working, they cannot spend as much either. And the so the cycle continues . . .Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4491040877840120845.post-44956276399654201452012-11-28T20:01:04.470-05:002012-11-28T20:01:04.470-05:00This was a great post. If we aren't able or willing to defend what we supposedly hold so dearly, is it really that dear? And we can all learn *something* from other people. Even if we hold opposing viewpoints.

Thanks for the great read!
- SSteph Nelsonhttp://thecivicarena.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4491040877840120845.post-29010354274561094122012-11-23T05:15:15.701-05:002012-11-23T05:15:15.701-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07360241823521617421noreply@blogger.com
