Free Music

My free music is everywhere. Today I dug up an old demo from a project I never ended up finishing, and was pleasantly surprised. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Requiem

Here's a rather odd number I wrote this weekend. In many ways it is one half "Insipid Pop Weekend" and one half "Rhesus." I am sure you'll see what I mean.

No fancy video this time. I was layering a lot of different tracks on top of each other; it would have been too much trouble to capture all of that on video.

But I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

Insipid Pop Weekend

Remember when I cooked up the idea of Insipid Pop Weekend? Far be it from me to leave you hanging. Here's the third installment. (Actually, this one is a couple of years old now.)

Enjoy.

October Was A Great Month

October was a great month for me.

For one thing, Stationary Waves had its most successful month ever, as measured by the total number of hits I receive on the blog, and marks four consecutive months of hit increases. For this, I only have my readers to thank, so let me take the time to do that now.

Thank you for reading. Over the past month, I've had visitors from all over the world, including many far-away places that I hope to see one day, and a few places I have already seen and would like to see again.

To facilitate reader interaction, and at the request of a few pointed comments from friends and readers, I have eliminated some of the barriers to posting comments here on the blog. So far, Blogger has been doing a great job with its built-in spam filter, so I don't anticipate any problems with this going forward. Drop by and leave a comment, and let me know how things are working for you.

It was also a big month for my YouTube channel. It also had its most successful month ever, as measured by views, driven by two new videos for Geist and Force of the Flow. As I may have mentioned before, I intend to make these videos a more regular feature on the blog, so stay tuned for more music - and perhaps a few other YouTube surprises.

To cap it all off, I put in more miles of running during October than any other month this year, as I build up my endurance base and prepare to undertake to run an upcoming marathon. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for injury-free training. Of course, I will be sharing my training schedule with you in the coming weeks.

Okay, enough of retrospective narratives. On with the pontificating!

Insipid Pop Weekend?

As I previously mentioned, I have a huge backlog of music that is written, but unrecorded. I intend to speed through the recording of a lot of this material, and I managed to wrap one up this weekend.

This is an old song. I believe I wrote it in 2008, for Prime Numbers. We used to play it live, and it came off pretty well. But, honestly, without the other guys, this song just doesn't sound right. Figures.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. It's called "Force of the Flow."

But What About Ryan Ruins Requests?

Don't be discouraged by the advent of Insipid Pop Weekend. As always, I continue to accept requests and dedications for my Ryan Ruins Requests feature. You can think of them as two sides of the same coin. Or two coins in the same pocket. Or two pockets in the same pair of pants. Or two outfits in the same wardrobe. Or two closets in the same skeleton... No, wait...

My primary objective in these undertakings is to experiment with some home recording, song writing, performance, and production ideas. I post them to the blog on the off chance that they are interesting to others; and also as a means to share my music with people I know more closely than my blog's readership, without having to constantly barrage friends and family with emails alerting them to the fact that I have more output available for consumption. But it's all in good fun.

I used to keep a music-only blog, but I found it less appealing to write constantly about music and composition, and didn't like the pressure of having to produce a recording, a piece of sheet music, or etc. each and every time I sat down to write something on my blog. Stationary Waves has managed to become a good repository of all my thoughts, be they musical, economic, literary, linguistic, fitness-related, diabetes-related, or random.

The bottom line is: please keep your requests coming. Don't be afraid to push me in new directions and challenge me. That's what it's all about. This blog will be a lot more fun and interesting if we maintain a communication feedback loop.

New Feature: Insipid Pop Weekend (IPW)

As I implied in my Requests Bleg post, I had something new brewing over the past weekend. This new thing is something I like to call Insipid Pop Weekend, or just IPW for short.

The concept behind IPW is straight-forward: Write and record an insipid pop song in a single day. Fill it full of bad musical cliches and make it as terrible as you possibly can... but make it relatively pleasant to the ear and well-performed overall.

Well, I'll let you be the judge of that. Here is the first installment of IPW, a song I call "Medusa."
